Life And Style | Bridal Carabao: A Unique Countryside Wedding Tradition from South Upi, Maguindanao

In the heart of the Philippine countryside, a beautiful and creative wedding tradition is capturing hearts and inspiring smiles, the Bridal Carabao.

This innovation, seen in South Upi, Maguindanao, replaces the usual bridal car with something far more meaningful and culturally rooted: a decorated carabao pulling a traditional wooden cart or sled, lovingly adorned with flowers, colorful fabrics, and native materials. The bride, often dressed in traditional or modest wedding attire and rides gracefully, turning her entrance into a moment of rustic elegance and rural pride.

More than just a charming visual, the Bridal Carabao symbolizes simplicity, sustainability, and respect for local heritage. In a time where weddings often chase extravagance, this humble alternative brings focus back to community values, cultural identity, and the beauty of slow, meaningful celebrations.

It’s a celebration not just of love, but also of tradition and ingenuity, a reminder that the most touching moments don’t always come from grandeur, but from the heart of the land and the people who cherish it.

South Upi’s Bridal Carabao is not just a ride but it’s a story, a statement, and a symbol of homegrown pride.

ELIZABETH OROPESA's Open Letter to Mar Roxas goes Viral

ELIZABETH OROPESA's OPEN LETTER
TO MAR ROXAS

Mukha bang masaya? Hindi rin. Si Pres CORY AQUINO na ang sumunod. Ano po ba ang ikinamatay? Old age?

SDCP Property | PLANTATION VILLAS at The Banana Beach,Tagum City, Metro Davao

The Infinity Pool at the Banana Beach with ocean view.

Exploring the Future of Real Estate: Tagum City's Plantation Villas at Banana Beach

 — One of the things I absolutely love about my work in real estate is the excitement of seeing new developments unfold. It’s fascinating to watch an area transform over time and imagine the possibilities that will come with it. Recently, I had the privilege of being invited to explore a high-end project in Tagum City, Davao, with some of my fellow colleagues. What caught our attention? The stunning new Plantation Villas project, located within the lush and serene Banana Beach resort.

Banana Beach: Where Nature Meets Luxury If you haven’t heard of Banana Beach yet, it’s time to add it to your travel bucket list. This resort is more than just a place to relax by the water. It’s a paradise where you can enjoy pristine beaches, a refreshing infinity pool, serene river cruises, and even explore a banana plantation! For nature lovers, the forest is a perfect place for an adventurous stroll, and the local wildlife adds a dash of excitement—imagine seeing monkeys swinging from tree to tree as you walk along the elevated E-Walk! But what makes Banana Beach even more exciting is the new development taking place right within its borders. Enter Plantation Villas—a luxurious, high-end residential resort designed to offer the perfect “home away from home.”

Plantation Villas: A Retreat Like No Other The Plantation Villas project promises a serene, nature-filled lifestyle ideal for those seeking peace and tranquility—especially retirees. With lots starting at a generous 1,000 square meters, homeowners can design their villas as they please. Whether you choose to have the developer build your dream home or hire your own contractor, the flexibility is a huge perk. One of the standout features of Plantation Villas is the exclusive access it offers to all the incredible amenities at Banana Beach. Imagine waking up to a day of relaxation by the infinity pool, indulging in delicious meals at The Lanikai, or fishing at The Spot. If you’re a sports enthusiast, there are plenty of options for you too, including tennis courts, basketball courts, and beach sports facilities—all free for residents to enjoy.

A Day in the Jungle: A Wildlife Adventure The best part of our tour wasn’t just the development itself—it was the journey through Banana Beach’s forest that truly took my breath away. As we strolled along the E-walk (an elevated walkway through the treetops), we were treated to some pretty incredible wildlife sightings. We saw monkeys leaping from branch to branch, and although it was hard to capture them on camera, the experience was unforgettable. To add to the thrill, we spotted a wild pig and even an iguana—both moving too quickly to get a good shot. But in that moment, it didn’t matter. It was the kind of raw, natural beauty that makes this place so special.

A Community Built on Nature The combination of modern, high-end living and nature’s untouched beauty makes Plantation Villas the perfect investment for anyone looking for peace, privacy, and luxury. Whether you’re looking to retire in paradise or simply want a second home where you can escape the hustle and bustle of city life, this development is a dream come true. As a real estate professional, it's truly rewarding to witness how spaces like Banana Beach evolve over time. With the upcoming high-end residential resort, this area will undoubtedly be one of the most sought-after locations in Davao. Are you ready to explore the future of living at Banana Beach? Let’s connect, and I’ll help you discover how you can become part of this exciting new development!

Blog | LOVE LETTER TO FILIPINOS by David H. Harwell

LOVE LETTER TO FILIPINOS
By Dr. David H. Harwell
Published on Feb 13, 2013 in Philippine Daily Inquirer

Update, Feb 2013
Photo of Dr. David H. Hardwell courtesy of GMA Network

Screengrabbed thru GMA Network

I just want to share this letter from American expat who really admired and love Filipinos.
I read this article on Facebook from "Most Controversial Files page", then saw it on GMA TV Network.

I am writing to thank Filipinos for the way you have treated me here, and to pass on a lesson I learned from observing the differences between your culture and mine over the years.

I am an expatriate worker. I refer to myself as an OAW, an Overseas American Worker, as a bad joke. The work I do involves a lot of traveling and changing locations, and I do it alone, without family. I have been in 21 countries now, not including my own. It was fun at first. Now, many years later, I am getting tired. The Philippines remains my favorite country of all, though, and I’d like to tell you why before I have to go away again.

I have lived for short periods here, traveled here, and have family and friends here. My own family of origin in the United States is like that of many Americans—not much of a family. Americans do not stay very close to their families, geographically or emotionally, and that is a major mistake. I have long been looking for a home and a family, and the Philippines is the only place I have lived where people honestly seem to understand how important their families are.

I am American and hard-headed. I am a teacher, but it takes me a long time to learn some things. But I’ve been trying, and your culture has been patient in trying to teach me.

In the countries where I’ve lived and worked, all over the Middle East and Asia, it is Filipinos who do all the work and make everything happen. When I am working in a new company abroad, I seek out the Filipino staff when I need help getting something done, and done right. Your international reputation as employees is that you work hard, don’t complain, and are very capable. If all the Filipinos were to go home from the Middle East, the world would stop. Oil is the lifeblood of the world, but without Filipinos, the oil will not come from the ground, it will not be loaded onto the ships, and the ships will not sail. The offices that make the deals and collect the payments will not even open in the morning. The schools will not have teachers, and, of course, the hospitals will have no staff.

What I have seen, that many of you have not seen, is how your family members, the ones who are overseas Filipino workers, do not tell you much about how hard their lives actually are. OFWs are very often mistreated in other countries, at work and in their personal lives. You probably have not heard much about how they do all the work but are severely underpaid, because they know that the money they are earning must be sent home to you, who depend on them. The OFWs are very strong people, perhaps the strongest I have ever seen. They have their pictures taken in front of nice shops and locations to post on Facebook so that you won’t worry about them. But every Pinoy I have ever met abroad misses his/her family very, very much.

I often pity those of you who go to America. You see pictures of their houses and cars, but not what it took to get those things. We have nice things, too many things, in America, but we take on an incredible debt to get them, and the debt is lifelong. America’s economy is based on debt. Very rarely is a house, car, nice piece of clothing, electronic appliance, and often even food, paid for. We get them with credit, and this debt will take all of our lifetime to pay. That burden is true for anyone in America—the OFWs, those who are married to Americans, and the Americans themselves.

Most of us allow the American Dream to become the American Trap. Some of you who go there make it back home, but you give up most of your lives before you do. Some of you who go there learn the very bad American habits of wanting too many things in your hands, and the result is that you live only to work, instead of working only to live. The things we own actually own us. That is the great mistake we Americans make in our lives. We live only to work, and we work only to buy more things that we don’t need. We lose our lives in the process.

I have sometimes tried to explain it like this: In America, our hands are full, but our hearts are empty.

You have many problems here, I understand that. Americans worry about having new cars, Filipinos worry about having enough food to eat. That’s an enormous difference. But do not envy us, because we should learn something from you. What I see is that even when your hands are empty, your hearts remain full.

I have many privileges in the countries where I work, because I am an expat. I do not deserve these things, but I have them. However, in every country I visit, I see that you are there also, taking care of your families, friends, bosses, and coworkers first, and yourselves last. And you have always taken care of me, in this country and in every other place where I have been.

These are places where I have been very alone, very tired, very hungry, and very worried, but there have always been Filipinos in my offices, in the shops, in the restaurants, in the hospitals, everywhere, who smile at and take good care of me. I always try to let you know that I have lived and traveled in the Philippines and how much I like your country. I know that behind those smiles of yours, here and abroad, are many worries and problems.

Please know that at least one of us expats has seen what you do for others and understands that you have a story behind your smiles. Know that at least one of us admires you, respects you, and thanks you for your sacrifices.

"Salamat po. Ingat lagi. Mahal ko kayong lahat."

News | New Province of Davao Occidental Takes Effect After Publication

Davao Occidental Officially Created as New Province

Davao City, Philippines
— The Davao Region marks a significant milestone with the creation of its newest province, Davao Occidental, under Republic Act No. 10360. The law was signed by former President Benigno Aquino III on January 14 and is set to take effect 15 days after its publication in national newspapers on Monday, January 21.

The establishment of Davao Occidental represents a major step toward strengthening local governance and accelerating development in the western part of Davao del Sur. The new province was formed through the division of Davao del Sur, with five municipalities from its second district now officially constituting Davao Occidental. These municipalities are Malita, Santa Maria, Don Marcelino, Jose Abad Santos, and Sarangani.

Meanwhile, the remaining municipalities previously under the second district like the Kiblawan, Malalag, and Sulop will be realigned with the first district of Davao del Sur, ensuring balanced representation and continued administrative efficiency.

The creation of Davao Occidental brings renewed hope for its people, as provincial status is expected to improve access to government services, enhance local autonomy, and open greater opportunities for economic growth and infrastructure development. With its rich natural resources, strong agricultural base, and resilient communities, the new province is poised to chart a future of inclusive progress and sustainable development.

As Davao Occidental begins this new chapter, local leaders and residents alike look forward to a province built on unity, opportunity, and a shared vision for a better tomorrow.

Quick Facts: Creation of Davao Occidental

Under Section 450 of the Local Government Code of 1991, as amended by Republic Act No. 9009, the creation of a province is subject to specific legal requirements. These include a minimum land area of 2,000 square kilometers, as certified by the Land Management Bureau; a population of at least 250,000, as certified by the National Statistics Office; and a minimum average annual income of ₱20 million.

Davao Occidental met and exceeded all these requirements. The new province has a total land area of 2,183.97 square kilometers, a population of 293,780 based on the 2010 census, and an average annual income of ₱113.22 million for the years 2008 and 2009.

As of 2012, the Philippines had a total of 80 provinces, while the Davao Region was composed of four provinces.

With the official creation of Davao Occidental, the total number of provinces in the country has increased to 81, and the Davao Region now has five provinces. These are Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Compostela Valley, and the newly established Davao Occidental.

The addition of Davao Occidental underscores the government’s commitment to decentralization, improved local governance, and inclusive regional development, marking a hopeful step forward for both the Davao Region and the nation as a whole.

TATERS Store is opening soon in Gaisano Mall of Davao

Screen grab from Taters website

DAVAO CITY, Davao
— Taters is opening soon in Gaisano Mall Davao. Taters is the only branded entertainment fast-food in the country today. You can enjoy it's first grade quality snacks like popcorn, fries, potato chips and sandwiches cooked on site. It is healthily prepared  by friendly crew and sells at reasonable price.

As far as I remember,  Taters first store is in Greenbelt Cinema in Ayala Center, Makati. Way back in the early 90's, it was just a food stall near the cinema lobby back then. If I may recall my first encounter with Taters, I bought a hotdog sandwich there (Greenbelt cinema), and when I  tried it, the taste was superb, it was like not your ordinary snacks that you can buy around the cinema's snack corner. So, from then on, it's a sort of habit for me to buy some snacks from Taters if I'm going to watch a movie in Greenbelt.

And now, It's good to know that Taters Enterprises Incorporated (TEI) is expanding there business here in Davao City.

Actually, I already visited Taters store in Abreeza Mall. (The first branch in Davao City and in Mindanao), the moment passed by the store, I really buy some stuff in there whether I'm into movies or just roaming the new mall.

Taters G Mall Davao | Photo: SouthernDC | Oct. 29, 2012

It's a good move for the TEI to open their second branch in Davao City at Gaisano Mall Cinemas. The store is located at the lobby area of the cinema. So there's no such hassle thing if you want to purchase this delicious snacks.

And here's more good news, the crew of the store will also deliver your snacks right inside the cinema, just pay the snacks that you want and give your seat number in the cinema and voila! you can have your snacks delivered right infront of you.

So, you don't need to worry for missing some lines of the favorite movie that you watch if you're getting hungry at the middle of the climactic scene.. plus the satisfaction and the fab style while enjoying the snacks.

So Davaoeño theatergoers... Enjoy...Chill...and Relax...Taters snack will be delivered right at your seat.

Here are some of the Photos during the concert night.

DAVAO CITY, Davao
— Air Supply is coming back in Davao City to do a concert, with the title of "Air Supply Live in Davao". It's been 4 years since the last time  the duo singers performed here in the City. The venue of the concert is in USEP Gym, Obrero, Davao City on Nov. 20, 2012.

Photo courtesy of Liezel Petallar's Fb account

Air Supply is an Australian soft rock duo, consisting of Graham Russell as guitarist and singer-songwriter and Russell Hitchcock as lead vocalist. They had a succession of hits worldwide, including eight Top Ten hits in the United States, in the early 1980s. They formed in Mebourne,Australia in 1975 and have included various accompanying musicians and singers.

With their heavily orchestrated, sweet ballads, the Australian soft rock group Air Supply became a staple of early-'80s radio, scoring a string of seven straight Top Five singles. Air Supply, for most intents and purposes, was the duo of vocalists Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell; other members came through the group over the years, yet they only functioned as backing musicians and added little to the group's sound. Hitchcock and Russell met while performing in a Sydney, Australia, production of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1976. The two singers formed a partnership and with the addition of four supporting musicians - keyboardist Frank Esler-Smith, guitarist David Moyse, bassist David Green, and drummer Ralph Cooper - Air Supply was born.

Are you an air supply fan?
Watch out when the deal goes live!
Here's a little teaser for you.
