STATEMENT BY MAYOR SARA DUTERTE ON DEPED SECRETARY POSITION

STATEMENT BY SARA DUTERTE ON DEPED SECRETARY POSITION
I wish to express my gratitude to presumptive President Bongbong Marcos for the confidence in me to lead the Department of Education.

Before the campaign, we talked about the Department of National Defense. But seeing the way things are at the moment, I expect that people who want to see the new administration to fail will fabricate intrigues about my loyalty and the DND position to break the UniTeam.

The Uniteam wants a stable Philippines and the most harmonious administration possible.

Yesterday, the presumptive President and I once again talked about how I could help the country. It was decided that I would work on producing skilled learners with the mindset to realize their full potential as individuals. Our country needs a future generation of patriotic Filipinos that advocate peace and discipline in their respective communities.

Meanwhile, we thank Sec. Leonor Briones and the entire DepEd organization for their readiness to work with our team for the transition of leadership after the proclamation.

We recognize the sincerity, hard work, and dedication of Sec. Liling in implementing education reforms under the Duterte administration.

Thank you.

Mr. Peter Tiu Laviña quits NIA post

DAVAO CITY, Davao, PH
President Duterte's spokeperson during the election campaign quits NIA post.

Laviña in his Facebook post said that he quit his post to spare Duterte from embarrassing  stories..

Paalam!
I have been vilified in the past; my name used, abused and maligned. Recently, there had been efforts to discredit me again. There are rumors circulating that I have asked money from NIA contractors. These are not true!
To spare the President from these embarrassing stories, particularly in these times of intensified attacks on him, I have quietly left government. I have neither personal vested interest in it nor ill intent towards NIA and the whole government, which we are trying to reform.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve the government, especially to President Duterte, whose trust I have never betrayed.
I have proven in the past that one need not be in government to do public service or work for the common good. I will likely continue to do so in media, civil society and the business sector where I have been involved before.
May the Lord continue to light our paths. God bless us all.
This is your water boy, signing off!

Duterte turns down World Mayor Award, says he’s just doing his job

Mayor Rody Duterte of Davao City

DAVAO CITY, Philippines
→ “Take my name out of the list, I don’t need the award,” Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said of his nomination to “World mayor,” a biennial award given by The City Mayors Foundation to uplift the profile of mayors and to honor those who have served their communities well.

He said he would not accept an award that would recognize him for just doing his job for the people. “I take my job seriously because I am the mayor, but if you say, you’re giving me an award, I won’t accept it, ayaw ko iapilapil, ngil-ad tan-awon (don’t include me, it doesn’t look good),” Duterte said, even as he jokingly compared himself with Marlon Brando, who once turned down an Oscar’s, saying, “I did the acting for my own.”
“Just like Marlon Brando, I did it because it was my job,” Duterte said, “I did it not for my own glory, but because that was what the people expected me to do.”

The mayor said he had declined other awards for the city, including the anti-smoking award in Singapore in 2010 and another award given by the American Cancer Society. “As a matter of principle, I don’t accept awards,” he said.

The City Mayors Foundation has been giving the award since 2004 to mayors who have made outstanding contribution to their communities. Dr. Kyoichiro Adachi, whose wife Nelma Nacion-Adachi is board of trustee and corporate secretary of the Davao-based Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai Inc., who nominated Duterte.

Davao City and the Leadership of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte

Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte

This is the kind of leadership Mayor Duterte is known for.

1) No Smoking
You can't smoke in hotels, malls, offices, business establishments, sidewalks, markets and any public places around Davao City.

2) Total Firecracker Ban - Including Christmas, New year and Chinese New year
Your money are well spent for noche buena and gift-giving rather than wasting money for firecrackers, which also produces pollution and injuries. Zero casualties for more than a decade now.

3) No to Kotong Cops
Eliminated Kotong Cops, Davao City has been winning and consistently a contender for the Most Outstanding Police Office in the Country.

4) No to bora bora ( noisy mufflers ) , Loud Vehicle Sound System

5) You can sleep peacefully at night, motorcyle borabora and Loud sound system are just a nuisance especially at late night and dawn. Run a borabora around davao, you risk yourself cited and bike impounded. You just have to respect other people's rights.

6) The apprehension of Drunk Drivers and puts them in jail
There is no law against that in the Philippines, Mayor Duterte is stepping up because drunk driving causes a lot of accidents and lost of lives.

7) Strict implementations of Speed Limits.
Pedestrians are no longer afraid of being run over by speeding vehicles, less vehicular accidents - statistics now shows 90% less fatal accidents since strict implementations. I myself got the ticket last Jan 30,2014

8) Strict Implementations of Traffic Laws
Traffic is very orderly in Davao. No beating the red light. Vehicles not allowed to step on pedestrian lanes. Also Police visibility is excellent, discouraging traffic offenders and as well as criminality.

9) Strict Implementation of Gambling Laws
Illegal gambling is not allowed.

10) Strict implementation sa 2/3 - 1/3 sidewalk clearances
Pedestrians always have a sidewalk, motorist always have roads and the vendors have a place to make a living.

11) Transform Davao into an award winning city over the years
Cleanest and Greenest highly-urbanized City in the Philippines, Most Competitive city to do business, Most Gender responsive LGU in the Philippines, Hall of Fame, Best Peace and Order council in the Philippines, Most Outstanding Local Government Unit, Top government withholding agent, 1st in overall Tax payments, Top tourist destination in the Philippines, Most outstanding Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines and in Asia Pacific Region, Most outstanding KBP Chapter in the Philippines, Cleanest air in the world - Member of Clean Cities Coalition, Most Culture-Friendly City in the Philippines, Most Child-Friendly City in the Philippines, Best City Police Office in the Country, Most Outstanding City Library in the Philippines, Best City to Implement Food Fortification Program, One of Only Three Areas in World to have the Integrated Emergency Response System, Most Liberal Political Climate in the Philippines, National Literacy Awards 2013 Hall of Fame under the highly urbanized city category, Best Quality of Life by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), Most Prepared Emergency Response System in the Philippines. One of the Top most livable cities in Asia. The City Mayors Foundation ranks Davao City as the 87th fastest growing city in the world, and it has been listed by the Foreign Direct Investment Magazine as the 10th "Asian City of the Future". Highest employment rate in the Country. Many more and expecting more to come.

12) No to Drugs
Very seldom or very little drug pushers around. Gone are the old ones and new players are testing the waters. But will fail time and again.

13) No to Criminals
Davao City was once the worst (No mans land) to become the safest city in the country,in fact, 4th safest City in the world. What a turnaround. A City not safe for criminals, but very safe for its residents.

14) Taxi drivers are not allowed to do contract fare, only meters are allowed or risk loosing franchise and vehicles impounded.
As a result, Davao has the most honest, very courteous and friendliest taxi drivers. No scammers. Always give change to the last centavo.

15) Best environmental protection. Strict Implementation in Protecting the water sheds
Best potable or drinking water in the country and one of the best drinking water in the world.

16) Anti-discrimination law implemented.
Considering Davao City is in Mindanao, a conflict driven area. But under his leadership, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Npa, Mnlf, Milf, Foreigners all live harmonously in Davao City.

17). Discourages graft and corruption
Eradicated most of the Corrupt officials under his jurisdiction in the City of Davao.

18). Advocates the Safety and Wellness of his constituents.
People of Davao enjoyed the services of Davao 911, the first and only one in asia. Its an Emergency Computer Aided Dispatch service with combination of police, emergency medical services, fire auxiliary, K9 units, urban search and rescue. To top of it all, its FREE. And you shoud see them in action .

19) Economic Boom and Job Creation
Davao City is now booming economically, that people around nearby provinces are moving in to Davao City, some from Visayas and Luzon are joining the bandwagon. New buildings are sprouting. A very different world as how Davao used to be. Now its population has ballooned to around 2.0M , Metropolis Davao is not so small after all. Mayor Duterte should be tough to manage a City this size.

20). The Mayor has always led by example
Since the mayor is doing his job well, and the people under him will be ashame if they will not do the same. This is how he gets the love and respect that he had from the People of Davao. You wont find his name and pictures on city projects, ambulances, bridges, basketball courts, electric post and so on. He never grandstand. He is very approachable, humble and down to earth. If you have some issues and go to him, expect it will be solved right in no time. Expect some action.
Again, Davao City was one of the worst before and have risen from chaos and anarchy.

Currently, it is safest city in the country and 4th safest city in the world. I bet each and every Filipino wants the same. So, no matter how much the media portrays how bad the Mayor is, the results of his leadership style stands and speaks for itself.

If Peace and Order is advocated. Graft and Corruption curtailed.

Guarantee, Progress and Development comes next.

And now, another milestone for Davao City.

Davao City has the highest employment rate in the country.

Davao City also has the highest satisfaction rating nationwide for businessmen in terms of policy and advocacy.

A night of fright reveals a virtue of Digong

Davao City, Philippines

The heavy downpour last June 5 gave a strong signal that rainy season is around. In fact, it did not come gently. The cloudbursts bathed Davao City with an unusually copious volume of rain that rendered many parts of the city impassable to small vehicles and inaccessible to pedestrians.

That rainy Wednesday night would just have been one of those evenings for incoming City Mayor Rodrigo "Digong" Duterte. The come-backing mayor is known to be a night owl. He prowls the city streets hoping to catch his prey of criminals among them drug pushers, snatchers, robbers, and other menace of society. He does this nightly to keep city residents safe no matter what the weather is. Never did he realize that in that evening will be part of an unforgettable episode to a distress young mother which he encountered that rainy eve.

June 5, 2013 to a mother of four is a night to remember. Annelyn Pongase Paunon earlier went shopping at Gaisano Mall for the school needs of her kids. Because she cannot not leave her toddler child, she tucked the baby with her and off they went to the mall. The weather was not as sunny then but there was no indication of a heavy downpour.

Night caught up with them at the mall not realizing that the light rain that come with dusk took a violent turn. When they decided it was time to go home they looked and waited for a taxi. But everyone else was looking for a cab which had become scarce as flood waters in most of the thoroughfares were no longer "navigable."

Annelyn started to be panicky. She had three small children in tow and a baby which she held close to provide warmth. By 11 p.m. there were no cabs in sight. The kids were jittery and Annelyn was as nervous. Tugging the children, she decided to make a dash to San Pedro Hospital hoping some patients might have taken a taxi to get to the hospital. They braved the rain and the rising water. Before they can make it across however, a black D'Max stopped right in front of them. The occupant on the front seat rolled down the tinted window. "Asa man mo?" The man on the front seat asked.

Annely replied: "Sa Skyline pa mi," she replied to the stranger.

The man in the black pick-up then told her in a much louder voice: "Sakay na kay ihatud ta mo sa Skyline."

Annelyn hesitated for a moment. She looked closer to the stranger who offered her the ride and recognizing who was the Good Samaritan she exclaimed: "Ay si Mayor diay!"

Annelyn and her children packed themselves on the back seat. She felt relieved she has a ride to take them home and safe and secured it was no less than incoming Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who will be conducting them all the way to Skyline.

The pick-up inched its way through the flooded street. But at the corner of Guerrero St. traffic was snarled and then went on a standstill. The Mayor and an aid alighted from the vehicle to man the traffic. He knew that it will take time to deal with the traffic jam, he directed his driver to take Annelyn and her kids to the doorsteps of their home at the Skyline and then to just come back for him.

Safe in the comfort of her home, Annelyn started to email friends about her unforgettable experience and encounter with Mayor Duterte. She can only imagine how the mayor was manning the traffic under the rain. She felt guilty she was not able to thank him enough. Then she remembered, she has a friend whose father is a journalist. She wanted to tell the world how caring is the Mayor of Davao City and how he dispenses his own comfort to extend help to the helpless.

This is her story in a capsule as told to my daughter Kristine.

First GPS-enabled taxi dispatching system in the country

DAVAO CITY, Philippines
— Recently, three large taxi companies, Sturdy, R & E and Mabuhay Taxi  in Davao City, launched the first Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled taxi dispatching system in Philippines.

The integrated GPS-enabled taxi dispatching system will take job orders received from the call centre and automatically assigns a passenger’s call for service to the nearest available taxis in the area.

Taxi drivers can respond by placing their bid for the order as well as locate their prospective passengers through the GPS system. This results in faster response time from the point of order to passenger pick-up as well as better customer service.

According to SmartTaxi Dispatching Inc. Managing Director Michael Ranola, “The deployment of GPS system aimed towards a better management and efficient usage of our taxi fleets. We also want to help our taxi drivers build a stronger and more stable income.

“With the GPS dispatching system, the income of taxi drivers can increase as much as 50% as they no longer need to drive around aimlessly to look for passengers or compete with other taxi drivers for the same passenger.”

In addition to that, the response from the taxi community towards the GPS enabled taxis has been encouraging since its introduction.

To-date, there are more than 150 Sturdy and RE taxis have been fitted with the GPS system. By just paying a small monthly fee, taxi drivers can subscribe to the SmartTaxi Dispatching system and will be trained on how to use the system.

Mabuhay Taxi owner Ryan Tan said “I am encouraged to know SmartTaxi Dispatching Inc has taken steps to advance the taxi service in our country as well as improve the income of taxi drivers with the GPS system and taxi booking app,” Currently, 100 taxis are successfully operating and hundred more taxis to come.

“At Sturdy and RE, we believe good taxi service comes about when taxi drivers are able to earn a decent income and our aim is to provide a quicker turn-around for taxi booking and a more efficient income generation for our taxi drivers. ,” said Jason Enriquez, President Sturdy Taxi.

Mabuhay Taxi, one of the biggest and oldest taxi fleet operators here in Davao City, teamed up with China Bank, BancNet and Megalink to pioneer cashless payments for taxis in the Philippines, according to Chinabank.ph

The deal, the first of its kind in the country, is a pioneering project to promote card-based transactions which is already popular in the rest of the world. China Bank Davao - Lanang Branch facilitated the deployment of state-of-the art wireless POS terminals of Mabuhay Taxi, one of its long-time valued clients, aided by the Bank’s Cash Management Services Division.

In an agreement signed by the parties last April 12, at least 20 units of Mabuhay Taxi will be installed with wireless point-of-sale (POS) terminals for the initial roll out. Over 200 units will follow.

The taxis won't even charge a minimum. "Even if it is below P100, the transaction will still be processed,” said Joselito Crisostomo, branch head of China Bank Davao-Lanang.
“I hope that more businesses will be inclined to adopt this technology as a payment channel for their goods and services,” added BancNet Executive Vice President and COO Aris Zafra.

Mabuhay Taxi is the first taxicab company in the Philippines to offer this service to its passengers.
And Davao City is the first City in the country who will experience this high tech ways of paying the taxi cab.

Meanwhile, Davao City Mayor "Inday"Sarah Duterte-Carpio also announced this on her Facebook Fanpage.

The tables provide assumed annual growth rates for cities and urban areas between 2006 and 2020. The assumptions are based on past growth/decline and forecasts by international and national statistics organisations.

The City Mayors Foundation, which is based in London, United Kingdom and Freiburg, Germany, said the annual growth rates assumption is based on past growth, decline and forecasts by international and national statistics organizations for the period 2006-2010.
The research group was established in 2003 and has become one of the most-trusted sources of research data on performances of cities and its leaders.

Below is an article clip published in www.sunstar.com.ph:
"It is good that Davao has been recognized for its development," Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said. She said despite this recognition, the city must still sustain its robust economy. Duterte called on Davaoeños to cooperate in sustaining the city's growth.

City Information Office acting chief Bong Aportadera said the recognition will help boost Davao City's niche as one of the country's top investment destinations.

"It is a proof that a strong leadership produces great result. There is nowhere to go but up," Aportadera said. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
