Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte's reply to Walden Bello.

Davao City, Philippines.
Vice Presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte's reply to Mr. Walden Bello's comment on mandatory youth military service.

"If only Walden Bello wasn’t so quick to jump the gun, he would know that my vision was not only to push for mandatory military service for the youth.

And an 18-year-old is definitely not a child.

Only the likes of Mr. Bello would think of mandatory military service for its citizens as arming them and telling them to kill — instead of looking at it as something that inspires patriotism in the youth.

If only he wasn’t so quick to react, he would have realized that I also emphasized the need for the youth to be prepared for disasters and become proactive community partners in rescue operations and in aiding victims of calamities.

The youth, I also said, should also play active roles in advancing their own welfare — particularly in the aspect of health, education, gender equality, and reproductive issues. I wanted them to be able to stand on their own, help themselves, help the communities, and help the nation.

If only Mr. Bello did not stop at what he has been so stuck in over the past many years — dictatorship in the Philippines, something that we know is a lie in the present time — he would have a better understanding of what I truly stand for.

The obsession over dictatorship in this country is as ancient as the belief that the youth have no actual important role in building a nation that is progressive and peaceful.

I truly hope that our youth do not grow up to be a Walden Bello — an ungrateful citizen who sleeps peacefully at the comfort of their homes, unable to say a prayer or a silent ‘thank you’ to the men and women who became martyrs while countering violent extremism, insurgency, and terrorism."

A unit of property developer DoubleDragon Properties Corp. is set to build what is touted to be Mindanao’s biggest hotel, a 519-room Hotel 101 with shopping and convention facilities in Davao City.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Tuesday, DoubleDragon that Hotel 101-Davao City would break ground in the last quarter of the year and is targeted to be completed by 2020.
Hotel 101 is a brand of Hotel of Asia Inc. (HOA), a subsidiary of DoubleDragon which aims to have a total of 5,000 hotel room portfolio by 2020. This will be the third Hotel 101-branded property to be added to its portfolio, following the existing Hotel 101-Manila near Mall of Asia and Hotel 101-Fort, which is already under construction.

DoubleDragon recently upgraded its 2020 goal to achieve 1.2 million square meters of leasable space with a mix of office leasing, community mall retail leasing, industrial leasing and hotels.
“We envision Hotel 101 to become the largest and most recognized hotel chain in the Philippines, significantly contributing to the recurring income of DoubleDragon, and at the same time providing the market with an innovative, safe and secure investment platform,” DoubleDragon chair Edgar Sia II said.

Apart from Hotel 101, HOA is also exclusive master franchisee of JinJiang Inn in the Philippines. Jiang Inn, one of the largest hotel chains in China, is seen to cater to growing tourists from mainland China. HOA currently operates two JinJiang Inns in the Philippines, one located along San Miguel Ave. in Ortigas and another located along Pasay Road in Makati.

SDCP Politics | Davao City Mayor Apologizes to Punched Sheriff

DAVAO CITY, Davao — Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has apologized to Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 16 sheriff Abe Andres who got at least four punches from her last year.
Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte

The lady mayor punched Andres  for ordering the demolition of shanties in Barangay Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Sr. Suliman, Agdao district, despite a plea from her to wait for two hours because she needs to be there before any demolition work starts.

The incident has led to filing of administrative charges and disbarment case against Duterte-Carpio but Andres opted not to sue the mayor.
Duterte-Carpio extended for the first time on Thursday her apology to Andres, who was detailed to the Supreme Court in Manila a few weeks after the punching incident.

"Gusto lang nako ipa-abot kay Abe Andres ug sa iyang pamilya bisag wala sila didto, apektado sila sa nahitabo (I wanted to extend my apology to Abe Andres and to his family because I know that even though they weren't there, they were affected by what had happened)," Duterte-Carpio said.
The mayor took the initiative despite her lawyers’ instruction not to apologize as it might be construed as an admission of guilt.

But when asked if she will also apologize to RTC 11 Branch 16 presiding judge Emmanuel Carpio, the mayor said she won't do so. Judge Carpio issued the writ of demolition on June 21, 2011 against settlers in Suliman, Agdao. The demolition, that was implemented July 1 last year, resulted in a riot between residents and demolition team members.

"Ongoing pana ang among away hantod karon (Our disagreement is still ongoing now)," the mayor said. Sunstar Reporter tried to get Carpio’s reaction on Thursday but he was already out of his office.

Meanwhile, the RTC Branch 16 still has no replacement for Andres. In the absence of a sheriff, assignments from the branch are forwarded to the four deputy sheriffs of the RTC-Office of the Clerk Court, lawyer Edipolo Sarabia earlier said.
