Cultural Identity on the National Stage: VP Duterte Dons Tribal Attire at SONA 2022

Quezon City, NCR — July 25, 2022 — Vice President and Secretary of Education Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio made a strong cultural and political statement at the State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2022 by wearing a traditional Bagobo Tagabawa dress on the red carpet of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.’s first SONA.

The Vice President's attire, a striking representation of Mindanao’s indigenous heritage, was borrowed from Bae Sheirelle Anino, the Deputy Mayor of the Tagabawa tribe in Davao City. The choice to wear an authentic tribal dress underscored Duterte's deep connection to Mindanao’s indigenous communities and her continued commitment to representing and uplifting the voices of marginalized sectors.

The Bagobo Tagabawa attire worn by Vice President Duterte was carefully crafted and rich in cultural symbolism, reflecting the vibrant history and identity of one of Mindanao’s most respected ethnolinguistic groups. Her decision to highlight indigenous culture on a national stage sent a powerful message about unity in diversity and the importance of cultural preservation.

As both the second highest official in the country and head of the Department of Education, Duterte's appearance in indigenous regalia also carried significance in her role as an advocate for inclusive and culturally responsive education. Her participation at the SONA red carpet served not only as a personal expression of pride in her roots but also as a public endorsement of indigenous identity and recognition in the broader narrative of national development.

The 2022 SONA, held at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City, marked President Marcos Jr.’s first address to the nation following his inauguration. Coney shares some photos of Vico's low key Birthday party in Instagram which was held in their home. And with the captions, "Happy Birthday, Vico!!! I pray that God bless your year(s) ahead even more! May He keep you in the center of His will and grant you the desires of your heart. I love you, son!".

Also in Instagram account of Mayor Vico, He thanked to those who greet and remember his birthday. "Maraming salamat sa inyo 10/10 kayong lahat," he said in his caption.

Prenup Photo in Mt. Apo goes viral

A pre-wedding photos of a couple in Mt. Apo wows the netizens online. It was uploaded by the photographer James Michael Montaño on Tuesday, June 13, 2022. The post has gone viral since it was uploaded.

Mt Apo is the highest peak in the Philippines and it is located in Mindanao. It can be accessed in Davao City, Digos City, Kidapawan City and other areas in Mindanao that surrounds the said mountain.

The couple, Steve and Erika, along with 16 others in the team including photographers, videographers, makeup artist, and porters, successfully pulled off a four-day super circuit trail prenup session at Mt. Apo. 

"We traversed Kapatagan entry point to summit Mt. Apo, enjoyed the picturesque scenes from Lake Venado, and reached the peak again to capture the clear skies from the top. On the way out, we passed through the boulders of Sta Cruz and finally finished the super circuit trail," narrated Montaño in an online interview by the a local News media. 

He added that this was by far the most challenging pre-wedding session that his team had.
