SPIA Development Consortium, a group led by local and international firms, has been granted the original proponent status (OPS) by the provincial government of Cavite for the redevelopment of Sangley Airport into an international gateway.

In a statement, SPIA Development said it submitted the unsolicited proposal in November 2021 to form a joint venture with the Province of Cavite for the Sangley Point International Airport project.

SPIA Development said Cavite Governor Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla issued the certificate of acceptance to the consortium on January 7, 2022.

The long-delayed Sangley Airport project is envisioned as a fully modernized, world-class and green airport that is designed to meet an anticipated increase in demand for air transport in the next 30 to 40 years.

Joining the local companies are global firms that include Samsung C&T Corp. of South Korea that built the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the iconic Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Terminal 1 of the Incheon International Airport, and the extension of the Changi International Airport.

Samsung C&T also built the Incheon Bridge and the Yeongjong Bridge, which are the main access and support infrastructure to Incheon International Airport.

Munich Airport International GmbH, the management services arm of Munich Airport, is also part of the powerhouse group. Munich Airport is Europe s only five-star rated airport and certified best airport for the past 14 years. In 2019, it handled 47.9 million passengers.

Rounding up the foreign members is the London-based Arup Group, acknowledged as the creative planning, design, and engineering force at the heart of many high-profile development projects in the world.

Construction of the New Manila International Airport in Bulacan

San Miguel Corporation President and COO Ramon Ang confirms the construction of the New Manila International Airport in Bulacan will begin by October:

“At tayo naman sa San Miguel, tuluy-tuloy ang ating investment to build infrastructure projects. In fact, nakuha na namin ‘yung approval or review ng DOJ [Department of Justice] doon sa Bulacan Airport. At ‘yung Bulacan Airport, tinitingnan lang namin ‘yung araw for the signing of the financial closure with the financer banks. So tuloy na rin ‘yan within the next two to three months, ‘yung Bulacan Airport, groundbreaking na rin,” Ang says.

He described the project as a "game-changer" for tourism — with an expected 30 million tourists flying in — as well as for the economy of Central Luzon.

The main goal is to decongest the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, which has been the main entry and exit point to Manila for air travelers.

The planned international gateway will feature four runways and can accommodate up to 200 million passengers per year.

Lawmakers seek to change NAIA to Paliparang Pandaigdig ng Pilipinas

House Bill No. 7031 seek to rename the Ninoy Aquiono International Airport to "Paliparang Pandaigdig ng Pilipinas".

The name bears no color, no political agenda," said Deputy Speaker Paolo Duterte as he, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco, and ACT-CIS Rep. Eric Go Yap filed the said House Bill.

The Manila International Airport was renamed to Ninoy Aquino International Airport in 1987 through R.A. no. 6639 under the Presidency of Corazon Aquino.
