Pasig City, NCR, Philippines — Opening its doors on April 24, 2013, Las Farolas: The Fish World emerges as the world’s first and only living museum dedicated entirely to ornamental freshwater fishes. Located in Tiendesitas en Frontera Verde, this multi-million peso theme park aims to promote conservation, education, and awareness of global freshwater biodiversity.
Set against the backdrop of growing environmental degradation and species extinction, Las Farolas responds to the urgent need for freshwater fish conservation. Globally, more than one-third of freshwater fish species are threatened with extinction due to pollution, overfishing, and habitat loss. In the Philippines alone, 418 out of 52,177 known species are endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Conceived by the late Don Rafael Ortigas and realized by Henry G. Babiera of Moment Philippines, Las Farolas serves as a beacon of environmental and cultural preservation. Its name—Spanish for "lighthouses"—symbolizes a call to action for the appreciation and protection of aquatic resources. The facility features two two-storey hubs, with biotops housing rare and exotic freshwater species from around the world, alongside dioramas of Philippine cultural landmarks and indigenous artifacts.
Apart from its educational exhibits, the museum offers interactive spaces for learning and community engagement, aiming to support future reintroduction of endangered species into the wild through partnerships with aquarists, scientists, and conservationists.
Las Farolas will open to the public starting April 25, operating daily from 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. With its unique mix of science, tourism, and heritage, it positions the Philippines as a global destination for aquatic education and biodiversity awareness.
