Labor Day: Job and Livelihood Fair 2012

An April 30, 2012 press release from the Department of Labor and Employment

Jobseekers who are interested in going to any of the DOLE's 51 Labor Day jobs and Livelihood Fairs across the country should not worry about not getting hired-on-the-spot (HOTS) by companies because the job fairs, despite being only a one-day event, will continue to process applications from job applicants.

Secretary of Labor and Employment Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz yesterday explained some employers may require qualified applicants to undergo their respective processes before they finally decide to hire.

“Selecting job applicants can be a tough challenge for employers. They may need more time to review job applications, to go over details of their credentials, and to interview candidates,” Baldoz said.

“Time invested in careful hiring procedures saves time and helps lessen incompatible job placements, which in the long run, will contribute to the goal of providing decent and productive work for all,” she explained.

“So, my advice to applicants is to be optimistic and be a little patient because there will be enough job vacancies and livelihood opportunities for everyone at the job fairs. The processing and hiring by the employers will continue after the job fair, and the DOLE will monitor that,” she added.

Baldoz noted that as jobseekers are required to register so they can be assured that their job applications will not be put to waste. These will be closely monitored by the Bureau of Local Employment (BLE), through its jobs-matching facility, the Phil-Job.Net.

As of press time, there are a total of 360,777 job vacancies offered by 1,706 employers across the 16 regions of the country. Of the number, 74,352 vacancies are offered by 1,085 local employers, while the rest are overseas vacancies.

Giving a preview of the “key employment generators” with vacancies to be offered at the job fairs, Baldoz said some of these are in human resources; marketing/trading; Business Process Outsourcing; food Industry; retail; health and wellness; tourism; information technology; automotive; and transport and logistics.

In connection to the job fair, the DOLE’s BLE held an employers’ forum at the Occupational Safety and Health Center in Quezon City during which the BLE said that employers who have not successfully filled-up their job vacancies may look into the data base of the Phil-Job.Net and call up applicants who may not be hired during the one-day event.

“Jobseekers must not easily get discouraged shall they not be hired on May 1. The BLE, through its enhanced Phil-Job.Net, will now be able to observe the status of each registered applicants. Employers may refer to the system for filling-up their existing job vacancies and, if necessary, we will make the referrals,” Baldoz explained.
