SPORTS | BASKETBALL PLAYER RAMON FERNANDEZ HISTORY
University of San Carlos’ Ramon Fernandez played for the Philippines in the 1972 Asian Youth Games, the 1973 Asian Basketball Confederation Championship, the 1974 World Championships, and the 1974 Asian Games.
At the start of the 1970s, Fernandez began his college basketball career at the University of San Carlos in Cebu.
It didn’t take long for him to catch the attention of Manila schools. After two years of playing for the Warriors, Fernandez transferred to San Sebastian College-Recoletos.
However, he didn’t end up playing in the NCAA. While serving his residency at San Sebastian, he attempted to transfer to De La Salle University.
Eventually, he began playing in the country’s premier commercial league, MICAA, joining the San Miguel Braves in 1972. After one year, he moved to the Komatsu Komets, which was later renamed Toyota Comets.
With Toyota, Fernandez quickly made a mark. His outstanding performances in the MICAA earned him spots on the Philippine Team in international competitions until 1974. However, he was later disallowed to represent the country as a professional player when his club, Toyota, transitioned from the MICAA to the newly established PBA in 1975.
The photo below shows Fernandez, who is a native of Maasin, Leyte, during his high school years at the University of San Carlos in Cebu.
