Davao City, Philippines — Senator Imee Marcos was spotted this week at a restaurant on Anda Street, Davao City, just days before the highly publicized inauguration of Vice President-elect Sara Duterte-Carpio. On the surface, it’s a simple appearance. But in Philippine politics, nothing is ever just casual.
Her early arrival in Duterte turf is raising eyebrows.. and not just for the timing. It’s no secret that behind the smiling photos of the Marcos-Duterte alliance lies a political partnership built more on strategy than sincerity. And with President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. now seated in Malacaรฑang, the question is: What happens to the power balance next?
A Calculated Appearance
Imee’s visibility in Davao isn’t just about attending an inauguration. It’s a message.., a reminder that while her brother holds the presidency, she herself holds a different kind of political currency: long memory, deep connections, and sharper instincts than many give her credit for.
She has openly disagreed with Malacaรฑang's decisions, raised eyebrows within the Marcos camp for her independence, and yet continues to carve her space in the national spotlight, without being under her brother's shadow. Her appearance in Sara’s home base is not just supportive.., it’s strategic.
Cracks in the Alliance?
The Marcos-Duterte alliance may have secured a landslide in 2022, but it was always an alliance of convenience, not conviction. With the Duterte camp taking increasingly critical stances on Bongbong Marcos’ policies, the political honeymoon is clearly over.
So what does Imee’s presence in Davao mean now?
Some say it’s a peacekeeping move, others whisper it’s a subtle positioning for 2028, with Imee possibly eyeing greater influence.., or even higher office. What’s certain is that she isn’t there just for the food.
Davao Isn’t Just Watching, It’s Listening
In a city where silence speaks louder than statements, and where political loyalty is currency, Senator Imee Marcos showing up early and publicly isn’t a coincidence.., it’s a chess move. And in Philippine politics, every move counts.
Watch this space. The game is far from over.
