Iconic 1970s 'Love Bus' Set to Roll Again — Now Free for All Commuters
Metro Manila, July 28, 2025 — A nostalgic yet forward-looking initiative is hitting the road: the iconic “Love Bus,” first introduced in the 1970s, is making a historic comeback — now as a free public transport service.
In his 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced the revival of the legendary air-conditioned commuter buses, first operated by the state-run Metropolitan Manila Transit Corporation (MMTC) during the administration of his late father.
Originally launched in 1975, the “Love Bus” was celebrated for being the country’s first public fleet with air-conditioning — a groundbreaking amenity at the time. Often painted in cheerful blue with heart motifs, these buses symbolized a modernizing Philippines.
The new era of the Love Bus will begin with pilot runs in Davao and Cebu, with plans to expand across the Visayas and Mindanao regions. As confirmed during the President’s national address, riders will not be charged a fare, part of a broader commitment to accessible and comfortable public transport.
The updated fleet is expected to retain the charm of its predecessor while featuring contemporary upgrades in safety, sustainability, and passenger experience.
As the government gears up for the pilot rollout, many commuters — especially those with memories of the original Love Bus — are welcoming this move with both nostalgia and optimism.
